Timing is EVERYTHING!  Catch it early.

How do I know if my child has a delay or a disorder?

Kids generally attain milestones within an expected age range.  Some kids learn to walk before they can talk and may be labeled “late talkers.”  I can determine if your child is exhibiting a delay or if it is a true speech and /or language disorder.  If you suspect your child has a delay or disorder, it is critical to have your child evaluated by a qualified Speech Language Pathologist as soon as possible.  Do not wait!  If your child exhibits a delay, I will send you home with a myriad of ideas to promote communication.  If your child is exhibiting a disorder it is never too early to start therapy to lessen the impact the disorder can have on his/her language, academic,  behavior, and social development.

What are some signs and / or symptoms that may indicate a true speech disorder?

While every child develops at their own pace, there are some common “red flags” that warrant a speech and language evaluation.

  • Your child had limited or no babbling as an infant
  • Your child is still using gestures or undifferentiated sounds versus true words at 18 months or older
  • Your child has difficulty participating in “peek a boo” games or is unable to repeat sounds made by parent
  • Your child’s ability to understand is greater than expression; frustration may be evident during communication attempts
  • Your child substitutes one sound for another consistently “tock” for sock “goe” for toe
  • Your child exhibits drooling, difficulty chewing, and/or has a limited list of foods he/she will eat
  • Your child repeats back words or phrases and does not appear to understand what was said
  • Your child is unable to follow simple directions
  • Your child does not engage in play activities with other children

What is the best age to bring my child in for a speech evaluation?

The best age will depend on several factors.  The type of problem will be an influence as well as the degree to which it is interfering with your child's life, interactions, and adjustment.  Any frustration or teasing by peers must be considered as a significant factor.  When in doubt, it's best to seek a professional opinion.  Keep in mind that the enormous value of early intervention has been proven many times over!

My child's pre-school teacher says he's been hitting/biting his friends & that he seems to be frustrated.  What can I do about this behavior?

Children with speech and language problems are often frustrated.  They may be unable to get their wants, needs, likes, or dislikes across through speaking so they are forced to use a different manner of communication.  Speech therapy can play a major role in reducing the use of inappropriate communication (like hitting, biting, screaming, or pinching).
